Having founded the firm in 1994, Henk’s focus is on commercial matters which involves an intricate knowledge of the following legislation: The National Credit Act, the Companies Act, trusts, veterinary legislation, consumer legislation, environmental laws such as the Biodiversity Act, and the national payment systems environment.

His approach to matters is to be pragmatic and provide a result. Time is always regarded as of the essence and he prides himself on constructive contributions and short turnaround times. Henk is a supporter of a healthy lifestyle, doing endurance mountain biking. He is married with three gifted children. He also supports the principles of Ubuntu and mentoring a new generation. He enjoys his holidays at the west coast at Langebaan, Western Cape.

Henk Cilliers recently traversed the Skeleton Coast in Namibia by travelling from Swakopmund to the Kunene River mouth bordering Angola.

The trip is a six night and seven day trip. Entering the Skeleton coast at Terra Bay some 300km North of Swakopmund you travel on the beach up to the river mouth. The tour guide called Jakkals (real name is Danie) is an encyclopedia of knowledge about the dunes, the galaxy, the landscape, the animals and more important how to use your 4x4 optimally and find your way through the dunes. We were all in all 12 vehicles and it is a self drive experience with Jakkals providing breakfast and dinner. Food and ablutions are prepared by Lucky, Marius and Happy what a blessing and truly good men. The vastness of the landscape is special and the starry nights something you cannot imagine. Wild animals are in abundance like Gemsbuck, Springbuck and Jackals. We were also fortunate to see the Desert Elephants.

Such a trip teaches you a lot about yourself and the people making the trip were truly amazing and I am fortunate to have shared this with my wife and some very special friends. How do you take two weeks off you may ask. Well just do it. Nothing will happen if you do not make it happen.

Reaching the Kunene river mouth we travelled inland through the dunes with Jakkals explaining the techniques. We then came down over the Jouberts pass which should be limited for pedestrians I think, and through the Kaokoland and Marienfuss Valley. How the Himba people survive I such desolate circumstances I do not know. Namibia is always a special place with hearty people. The trip is also a resemblance of when men were men conquering uninhabitable land and a tribute to our forefathers who had broken in this wild landscape.

I am indebted to my wife who accepted the challenge to camp with limited resources. Accompanying us from our fraternity was adv Bertus Bergenthuin SC and Bernard van der Hoven (who made it happen), adv Org Basson and adv Albert Lamey. Punctures are at the order of the day so a proper repair kit is required.

One cannot imagine being so busy the whole day as we drove every day from 9 in the morning to 17h00. In total we travelled 6002 km from and back to Pretoria. A very memorable holiday seeing the sight of the Duneden Star and having read the book, times have certainly changed. The Kunene River has a history to it second to none.

Will I do it again? For sure but then for fishing the Kunene and the coast. Access to the Skeleton coast is limited to one concession holder and three guides that he allows to accompany people. Jakkals is a true legend having been doing this for more than 30 years.

A valuable lesson learned was to travel light.
